As the saying goes, “Time waits for none” and not even for the greatest mind of all time. We will never hear his robotic voice ever again and that is the saddest thing for the science world.

From being diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) at the age of 21 to discovering black hole radiation, his life was anything but boring. Here are some of the facts you would probably want to know...

1. On 8th June 1942, Mr Hawking was born in Oxford, England. He was the eldest of four children of Frank Hawking, a biologist, and Isobel Hawking, a medical research secretary. Even after having a mind of 160 IQ score Hawking scored among the worst in his class but was always good in math and chemistry. Also, he was bullied in his childhood. The little boy was more interested in jazz, classical music and debating than sports and pop.

2. Hawking receives a scholarship to attend Oxford University college and began his studies there. But shortly after that he was showing the symptoms of clumsiness and was falling often without any reason. And because of his family's pressure, he agreed to see a specialist.

3. Later, Hawking was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and was given a few years to live. After hearing this news Stephen naturally became upset. But seeing a boy struggling with leukaemia made him realized that there are others fighting to live their lives, so why not him?

4. Having this new mindset he soon started to date a girl who was a language student, named Jane Wilde. Jane was instantly attracted towards Stephen’s sense of humour and independent personality. Soon they exchange rings and became parents of three beautiful children. According to Hawking, their marriage was “something to live for.”

5. One of Hawking’s most talk about achievement was his theory of the universe has no boundaries in 1983. He discretely explained the universe is endless, even though it is a contained entity. The universe is four-dimensional, just like the endless, cornerless surface of the earth.

6. At a Royal Society meeting, Hawking interrupted a lecture by renowned astrophysicist Sir Fred Hoyle to let him know that he had made a mistake. And when he was asked how he knew, he simply replied, “Because I’ve worked them out in my mind”.

7. After all these much activities, he was invited to experience an adventure of a lifetime in 2007. He was able to experience zero gravity and float out of his wheelchair. The Zero Gravity Corp was the main reason for this. The service involves an airplane ride in which sharp ascent and descent allow passengers to experience weightlessness in flight for several rounds, each about 25-seconds long.


8. Despite being in a wheelchair Hawking successfully made a book out of his knowledge about the universe and its limits, named "A Brief History of Time". The book by Hawking and Professor Jim Hartle sold 25 million copies worldwide.

9. In February 1990, Hawking sadly left his partner of 25 years to marry his nurse Elaine Mason. But this was only lasted for 2006, as they get divorced.

10. Stephen Hawking collected many awards throughout his life. In 2009 he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He was also given many medals and prizes like Fundamental Physics Prize, Copley Medal and the Wolf Foundation prize. Sadly, Stephen didn't win a Nobel Prize even after being more than capable.

His true journey began from the moment he was told that his life was coming to an end. But just like everything that starts has to end, the era of Hawking had to end too. But his theories will be alive forever, just like the eternal universe.
